I had a young couple of chickens and both were very comfortable with each other but one day the rooster died. I brought one new of the same breed but the both are not getting settled wtih each other. everytime I leave them together they indulge in terrible fight and i have to get in to stop it. What should I do to make them comfortable and move towards mating.
and Welcome To BYC! X3 on introducing the new bird to the flock and doing a health quarantine. After keeping the new bird totally apart from the others for a couple of weeks, itt is best to have a long period of the two being able to see each other but no touching, through wire seem to work best, ie dividing the coop into two sections or keeping the new bird in a cage inside the coup for a couple of weeks to a month at least. The chickens will get to know each other and sort of work out a pecking order before actually coming in contact with each other. After a week or two, letting them free range together is a good idea and should help... It will take a couple of weeks to get the pecking order sorted out. Adding a rooster to and established flock of hens is usually easier than adding a new hen, but it still takes some time. There is a nice article in the Learning Center on integrating flocks you might like to check out, the part about actually combining them is after the quarantine section
