These are my new silkie and frizzle babies. We will only be keeping 1-2 hens as their destiny is to be registered LESA’s for my little flock of emotional support hens. I love having a place where I can see photos of their growth all in one place. I’d love opinions of their gender as they develop. I know guesses aren’t really relevant until about 8-12 weeks. But I enjoy the guessing game. I’ve been doing a lot of observing on behavior as well. My first guess is that our grey satin frizzle (Fern) is a pullet. The smaller painted silkie (Georgia as in O’Keefe) is a pullet. The larger painted silkie (Pip) I think is a cockerel. Our little special-needs black frizzle (Puddin’) is clearly either a pullet or a cockerel and I have no idea which 😂 but that little Pom Pom on it’s head just gets me.
Our breeder told me that the little black baby almost died during hatch because she was shrink wrapped. She made it with assistance from the breeder but was definitely in rough shape. Her down never dried properly, she was missing chunks of it and she even had open wounds under each wing. Our wonderful breeder gave her to us for free to see if we could bring her around. After a few days of gentle care and close monitoring this little black frizzle is a bouncy, sassy little fuzz ball. I gave her a bath in warm water and brushed out her goopy/ crusty fluff with a soft infant toothbrush. She’s going to be referred to as a ‘she’ until I know otherwise. I already snuggle and sing to her. ‘Black bird singing in the dead of night, take these broken wings and learn to fly...’ she sleeps or gently peeps back. So sweet!

Anyways, these are their 2 week photos.
At the end I’ll post our little black baby at 8hrs old.

3 week photo update. We found a new home for the larger painted chick as he was already showing very dominant behavior. He was chest bumping and kicking at just 2 weeks. He also towered over these three in stance.

I’m also very curious about our little grey Fern because we’ve discovered she’s a frizzle, but what colour she will be is a mystery. She’s quite a dark grey but feathering out white so far 🤔
I’m thinking maybe painted/ splash? She seems to have some light grey spots on her wing feathers but I’ve never seen a dark grey chick be a splash... Has anyone else? Thoughts?

We have a bantam cochin who was a gorgeous grey chick, but she turned into a white bird as she feathered in with one tiny black spot under a wing.

You sure have some cute babies. 🥰

Oh neat!! I’m glad this has happened before. I couldn’t find anything online about this specific colour of chick and an adult white bird.
