New Silkie Chicken daddy !

Hello and welcome to BYC

Let the chicks get used to colder temperatures gradually, 5* a week like you've read. Once they are fully feathered (± 6 weeks) you can start turning the heat off for a few hours a day and also start putting them outside during the day to get them used to the cold. You can bring them in at night or let them sleep under a heat lamp in the coop until they don't need it anymore. Just don't plunge them from a cozy warm brooder into the cold suddenly.
