Concerning my egg question:

I have 9 Red-star hens, I was told a chicken farm was going out of business And that the hens were being sold at auction. So the lady I bought them from actually bought them at auction and she said that the hens were only about a year old. They had lots of issues. I’ve treated them all. They have always laid really well. I give so many eggs to people and even the local soup kitchen.
Now, Concerning my eggs, recently when the eggs are just a few days old you can shake them and feels like the egg is loose from the inside. They are still edible, but I can’t give them away like that, people think they are rotten.
So what’s the problem?

The white gets thinner as the hen ages.

They are likely older than you think.

Are they pets or do you want to keep up egg production?

Tractor store here had chicks a couple of weeks ago. Fall would be a good time to brood chicks--they will be laying eggs in early spring. You could then cull or process the older hens. There is a market for older hens in the area. They are often used as pets
