I designed and have been building a new coop for my feathered friends and thought I'd share some pics. The coop itself is 8 foot wide by 7 foot deep, 5 feet high at the back wall and 8 feet at the front. The nesting boxes are to the left rear as you enter and are low for Silkies. There will be a human entry door with a window next to it. The run will be to the right of the coop, 7' wide by 10' long, 6' high and covered with single slope 'shed' roof similar to the line on the coop. I built the foundation and wall framing on 5/15 and then got the rafters done on 5/16. Today I put down the BlackJack #57 floor coating. We'll be doing deep litter. Enough said.. Here are the Pics.. 20180515_132541_HDR.jpg 20180515_153313.jpg 20180515_173135_HDR.jpg 20180515_204210_HDR.jpg 20180515_113145.jpg 20180517_173358.jpg 20180517_173358.jpg

I plan on finishing the soffit and putting in soffit vents. I'll also have cross vents on each side of the coop.
You didn't mention where you are located. You can add it to your profile too. When we built our winter coop here in North Texas, I thought we put in plenty of ventilation. However, several of my hens got a touch of frostbite last winter. We added more.

I'd just use Hardware Cloth....much better ventilation both summer and winter.
You need good ventilation year round, can always dampen air flow with cardboard tacked to rafter bottoms inside during winter if needed.

Add fascia to below rafter bottoms to help block wind blown snow/rain,
and to attach HC to.
