New Thing (For me anyway) have you seen this behavior?

The other night 1 remaining white guinea didn't go into the coop went on TOP of the Coop instead. The light was on inside coop and have a clear roof so light was shinning through and it was pitch black. So I got out the ladder and climbed up to the roof and tried to get her to come over but she wouldn't. I noticed she would occasionally open her mouth, like choking on something, but no sound came out. Not the coyote's started hooping and hollering down the hill about 75 yards from coop over fence, understand we live at 8800 feet in the mountains. Anyway she laid down of course in the direct center, so I tried to reach for her and the mouth started again. Then she stood up and as I reached for her she leaned forward spread her wings out and in towards her face to make herself look bigger and did the mouth thing but this time was hissing. Reminded me of the raptors on Jurassic Park, so has anyone ever experienced that before?

Hmm. Maybe she couldn't see you and thought you were a coyote trying to get her since she probably heard them.
But you did say you had a clear roof with the light shineing towards the roof..

I just got my guineas about 2-3 months ago. So I haven't really experienced the whole guinea lifestyle yet.

my guineas do the same thing when there roosting at night
they hiss tho
theyll lunge there head foward at me as i walk beneath them

That raised wing thing and the hissing is a sign of aggression/being defensive, but why she was acting that way will need to be looked into. Hopefully she was just being grouchy and just did not want to come in that night for her own reasons... but she may have an infestation of what are called gape worms, little reddish colored hair thin worms that infest the throat and crop area, if this is the case you will be able to see them when she is opening her mouth and hissing at you. She may have an impacted crop instead tho, stuffed full of grass, weeds, even sticks and leaves, and even a piece of wire or something. Any of these cases can make for a confused, cranky/defensive Hen, so whatever the case, you will want to catch her and check her out and make sure she is ok.
