New to all things chicken.

You're right on target Michael about the diversity within a breed. We currently have 2 SS...one of them just sort of mumbles and chuckles to herself all day long. The other one sounds like a raspy voiced banshee (love her but she is LOUD). We got them from the same place, at the same time but just like parents comparing their kids, you'll find differences.

And hey, we get cold here...just at a higher temperature then you northerners!

LOL! Actually you get colder than I do right now living in Hawaii as I do, however if our plans pan out, we'll soon be living where winters will be cold. I've lived where winter temperatures dropped to 30 F below zero and a lot of breeds' laying pretty much shuts down in those kind of winters. :o(

I appreciate all the feedback. I think now maybe the tentative breeds to start with is the Easter Egger, Orpingtons and may go with a Black Australorps and hope she isnt that rowdy. What are the odds of these breeds getting along well together, or do most tend to be ok with other breeds?

I've head that Black Australorps and Orpingtons are both very docile and they get along with a lot of other breeds. My flock is mixed, and they all get along great (most of the time

Good, that was a little bit of a concern. Well, I am super excited and hate that we have to wait till September. I have the coop about 70% done, started a mealworm colony to hopefully win their favor, and have already spoke with the individual I will purchase from. Now to the waiting.

welcome! I have all hens because of our neighbors!! My bantam - not sure what she is she looks like a Cochin . She talks all the time. My leghorn rules the coop. My Orpington and buff comet are great ! I have a blue Americauna and copper Moran ordered that I'm super excited about. So far they all get along and are super quiet except for my little bantam !
