Hello I am very new to raising chickens my husband raised meat chickens last year but we decided on egg layers this year we got them just after Easter 2013 I am wondering when we should be getting eggs?? We have 13 ladies in a coop 8x16 with a run outside 6x16 is this enough room? They seem happy, I just want to make sure we are doing a good job of keeping them healthy and happy. Any advice would be ever so appreciated!! Thanks so much

Welcome to BYC, From West TN !!

Depending on the breed on the egg laying anywhere form 18 - 25 weeks on mine to get started. Room sounds good for the amount of birds that you have..

you want 4 sg.feet per bird in the coop and 10 sg.feet of space for each bird in the run.

Thanks to all of ya! Any one have ideas on how to keep their food and water trays clean we can't hang them. We have a 5 gallon waterer that we bought from tractor supply and my husband made them feeders, the waterer we have up on a concrete block so it's not on the ground but they keep kicking their bedding into the lip where the water collects! I clean it out twice a day but when I am at work during the day I know they are drinking dirty water. Is it going to make them sick?

I solved my water issues by putting a nipple system in. My feeder is a 5 gallon bucket with a metal hog pan attached to the bottom and holes drilled around the perimeter of the bucket.. I have a range feeder for scratch that is a deer feeder in the run.. I use it for those days away.. You can see them in my profile.
