We haven't yet bought our chickens or even decided which kinds to yet. But we are a family of 6 with 4 children who are excited to get started but first we want to do as much research as possible to make the best choice . Like for one we live in NY so they would have to be ok for cold temps although we are very much animal lovers so we would like them to be able to join us indoors when the temps are too cold..

Hi there,

and welcome to BYC!

You might start here at the learning center of BYC. Lots of good reads here...

And then you might next stop by the breeds section of BYC for some info on the different breeds and their characteristics.....

Great to have you aboard and enjoy BYC!

OR you could get a docile breed like silkies for housepets and have more rugged birds for layers that would live a regular chicken life. I make the distinction because if the birds are brought in when it's cold put back when it's warm - they will not be acclimated and will suffer more than a bird that is never in the home.

There are several Silky threads if you want to learn about them, there is also a variety of silkie called Showgirls, very exotic looking - they would be good in the home or one of the tiniest breeds Seramas that were developed to be pets in Malaysia - they take confinement very well.
