Hi,
welcome-byc.gif

Stop feeding them Layena and move to FlockRaiser.
or some general maintanence feed.
They weren't meant to be layers, just meat birds.
Best,
Karen

Why can't they eat Layena? Will it harm them in some way?
They may eventually lay, even if infrequently - right?
I see what she is saying. I am "sure" they will lay if they get old enough, but until a chicken lays, the calcium builds up, and will do damage to their bodies, resulting (sometimes) in death.
Flockraiser is the right choice right now. The back of the bag will tell you at what age to feed what.

I bought 50 Cornish Rock cross day old chicks almost a year ago. You can't let them eat like you would regular chickens. They will literally eat themselves to DEATH! Restrict their feed to only 12 hours or less a day. I harvested some and some get to be laying age(6 months) before we realized it. Yes they do lay eggs, infrequently, but the chicks that hatch out will not be the double obese chickens their parents are. I still have 2 hens and 1 rooster. The eggs hatched to be a sort of white rock. The rooster will be harvested soon. He is about 15 pounds and about the size of a white midget Turkey, but very heavy on fat sturdy legs. This breed is a cross from White rocks and Light Cornish muscular birds. They have been crossed and recrossed into the hybrids that are harvested as babies, but make a great stewing bird, similar to a capon. The 2 hens are mating with my large roosters, and if I can find the time to separate them and get a dark Cornish rooster, it might be interesting to hatch out a few eggs and see how they turn out.
