Hello, all!
My name is Donna. I live in Northern Ky. I have raised almost every animal that you can imagine. I have raised (from babies) ducks, which I loved, loved, loved!! But when I moved, I could not take my ducks. I use to live in Ohio and they have a large park there that is full of ducks and they are all tagged and protected. So I took the babies (they were 2 yrs old) there. :-D They are fat and happy. When I lived in Georgia, the house I rented came complete with chickens (5 hens and 1 rooster) They were beautiful. They were what I guess you would call "free range" chickens and I didn't have much interaction with them. Everyone in the neighborhood was afraid of the rooster, I guess he had attacked some people. We had a very good understanding, "I'll feed you, and if you attack me, I'll eat you for supper" I think he was maybe a fighting rooster or something. He was VERY LARGE, and absolutely beautiful. He had large talons (for flogging I guess) and long feathers on his feet. Just the most magnificent bird I've ever seen!! Well, one day while I was at work, he attacked AND TRIED TO KILL my 2 yr old daughter!!!! His talon just missed her temple and her eye!! The ambulance came, she was a bloody mess. So I'm figuring you can guess what happened to the rooster.... *the attack was completely UNPROVOKED as she was playing out back right by the door.
After he was gone, all of the hens just kind of wandered off. So that was many years ago, my daughter is now 26, and still bears the scars of the crazy rooster!!
Tonight my grandbaby and I stopped at TRACTOR SUPPLY to "look" at the baby chicks. And now I'm a chicken farmer :-D :-D
I bought 6 chicks. I have 3 PULLETS, 2 BANTAMS, and 1 CORNISH ROCK. Is that a good start? 2 of them are black and are suppose to lay black eggs. My luck, I got 2 roosters. But that'll be ok, I'll just get more and hope for a hen. They are inside, in a large dog crate at the moment, fast asleep under the heat lamp. I got all of the stuff that the guy said I needed in order to raise chickens. I'm going on Monday and getting a chicken coop. I found this page by luck, and I'm just hoping for the best!!
My little chicks are so adorable. I really want to have a variety of chickens. Some that lay exotic looking eggs and some that just look exotic. They will all be PETS....NOTHING GETS EATEN ON MY FARM! Suggestions and comments would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!!

If at all possible, avoid buying a pre-fab coop. Rarely do they accommodate the number of chickens claimed, and they are not the strongest. A garden shed can be easily transformed into a much better chicken coop (as well as accommodate chicken maths). If you are handy at DIY, or know someone that is, then the Coops section has pages and pages of inspiration.

All the best

I agree with: "Nothing gets eaten on my farm."
I am the same way the worst I do if I get mad at them is throw them in the woods!
