My husband and I live on 1 Acre in the Bitterroot Valley of Western Montana. We are older but active. We have gardened for years and would like to have about 3-4 laying hens. We plan to build an insulated chicken coop with attached run next to the garden. I like Rhode Island Reds and I'm sure we can keep them happy and safe while enjoying their eggs and personalities.

Hello and welcome to BYC! :frow Glad you joined.
Please visit the Coop and Article pages and search on 'insulating coop'. You will find that the vast majority of us in snow country do not insulate as a very well ventilated coop designed to prevent drafts on roosted birds serves the flock very well. I know @Meg-in-MT does not insulate or supplement heat and has a healthy happy flock.
