Hello, It has been a lifetime since I helped my grandmother with her chickens. I have always left the animal farming to my husband. I have been reading and it all seems so complicated.... the information about prolapsed chicken butts is really scary.

Thank you all for the friendly welcome. I have yet to purchase my first chicken. I figured I better try to learn a little before I practice on the babies. So far I have my cardboard box and a light. I purchased some chick starter, feed and water trays ( that attach to jars) and some zip ties just in case I need to attach something. Oh, I forgot ... I also got some puppy pads and shavings. I am adverse to setting this up in my house (washroom) but too many predators otherwise.

Welcome to BYC!
There are quite a few chicken illnesses that can easily be prevented. Be sure to give the birds a balanced diet and do not feed treats often or at all.
Read through the emergency and disease forum... Pay attention to what people feed their birds while reading.
