There are quite a few chicken illnesses that can easily be prevented. Be sure to give the birds a balanced diet and do not feed treats often or at all.
Read through the emergency and disease forum... Pay attention to what people feed their birds while reading.

Things are much more complicated now. My grandmother kept a large coop (she had 12 kids to feed) and the only thing I remember her feeding is soaked maize.
