Welcome! Lots of us dangerous chicken keeping homeschoolers around here! Lol We love our Australorps and Welsummers which give us a beautiful gray of all chains of brown to super dark brown and speckled eggs, even in winter. We've only have occasional issues with mild frostbite on the very coldest nights, but nothing serious.
If you look at peacomb breeds like Wyandottes or Dominiques, you may have even less of that issue, but you want to make sure they can handle the heat as well.
Our Australorps have been the best of both since they just need normal shade and summertime, and being black, but otherwise they do fine year-round. They have also been very friendly, tame chickens for us, which is nice when the kids want to help. I've also heard Speckled Sussex are very friendly that way, but I have yet to have them to my flock. Hopefully someday!
Enjoy your research and setting up your flock!
