We use the crate method too. We've got the XXL one so it holds five if needed. It's usually 4-5 days. A couple of these silkie hens are perpetually broody, so they're out for a week, then back in again.

Is the dog crate solid wire and elevated off the ground? Those are important features. If it gets a very warm where you are you might want to add a couple of cool, not cold, water dunks to help cool her off throughout the day.
