So we live in Northwest ohio, and we just bought 30 chickies. 11 pullets, 9 bantams, and 10 australorps. We have had them for about a week. I was told to get a few more than I wantes, because they wouldn't all make it. So far they are all still living. We are in the process of building our coop. I got a lot of ideas from pinterest. :) the coop will be 7 1/2' by 11 1/2' and 8' tall. I know all about providing proper ventilation and adding windows and all that. My main concern at the moment is that my original design was going to be half of the coop a run and the other half the Indoor coop.but now I'm realizing that I want all my chickies to have ample space and room to roost and roam. So I am going to build (with the help of my husband of course) a tractor run off the side of my coop. I already have the hardware cloth on its way. (Thank u pp for suggesting wayfair) I'm just concerned about whether I should have the bottom of the run covered in hardware cloth as well. And if so, I know it won't be easy on the chickens' feet so how should I do it? I want the ground showing so they can easily pick and eat the bugs, seeds, grass, etc. I would love to let my chickens free range, but the are neighbors about a mile away who have 3 dogs that they just let run loose, and I have a pit bull and she isn't too fond of the chickens either. We also have woods across the street and have noticed some coyotes have a pack over there and I know those are obvious predators. The run will have the hardware cloth over the top as well bc of hawks around here. We also have a mole problem in our yard with very obvious holes through the yard. And we have crawdad holes everywhere and snakes...all sounds so lovely lol. Clearly I need to use this hardware cloth effectively so if anyone can give me detailed information on how to do this hardware cloth under the run, I need the help. 19yr old and first time chicken flock owner. I want the run to be at least 12'x 20' and will be done with 2x4s. I'm hoping to add some wheels to make it mobile once the chickens tear through the grass haha. Obviously I won't b able to move it alone...that's what the atv will be used for lol. If anyone has any advice, it's appreciated.

Hi and welcome to BYC. Maybe you could take a look at the Coops forum and also type "using hardware cloth" in the search box. Additionally you can post your question in the Coops and Runs forum.

In the meantime, the Learning Centre is a great resource, even for experienced chicken keepers - loads of info on anything chicken. https://www.backyardchickens.com/atype/1/Learning_Center

Joining your state thread will put you in touch with other BYC members in your area, which can be helpful (just type the name of your state in the search box).

All the best

Glad you have joined us.

You really should post the questions under coop/run sections for more input.

But IMO it is impossible to predator proof a mobile run. I would suggest a stationary fortified run - with buried hardware skirting.
