I am interested on any info re: buying a coop vs building a coop, the pre built seem to have all the bells and whistles, like cleaning trays etc.... but not sure 1/2" walls are sufficient for our winters in Orange County New York...any info would be appreciated. I have read a few books but would like some input from people who actually do this daily, is buying a coop kit worth, the $300-600 price tag they have?
Thanks in advance for any help

My walls are only a half inch thick and I live in Michigan. I think 1/2" would be fine.

! Pleased to have you aboard! Yes, 1/2" is sufficient - even without insulation. In terms of coops, I haven't seen all of the pre-made coops out there, obviously, but the ones I've seen have seem kind of shoddily built...like they would stand the elements very well. Just my opinion. I think for $600 you could build a very nice and well-constructed, predator proof coop. Hope it all works out for you!
