Hello. We are new to BYC. We love this website and have been lurking for the past few months absorbing the abundance of knowledge and cute chicken photos. My son, Tommy and I (Jennifer) got our first chickens 9 weeks ago after several years of promising him that "next year we would get chickens." He is now in 4H and having a lot of fun his chickens. We of course have been busy doing "chicken math" and the two chickens my husband told us we could have somehow multiplied into 25 chickens. Oops. Anyway hubbie took it in stride and built us a nice chicken coop tractor. The breeds that we have (or had in the case of our Cornish X) are Polish, Cornish X, Black Australorp, Speckled Sussex, Ameraucana, Light Brahma, English Lavendar Orpington, Freedom Rangers and a guinea.

Welcome to BYC! That's a very nice selection of breeds you have. That polish in the top picture is absolutely gorgeous! I was the same way when I started. My grandparents and my parents always kept a dozen or so chickens for their use. Once I made it my hobby, the number jumped to over 50. (Plus the duck, geese, and turkeys!) They're definitely addicting. Don't hesitate to ask questions, should any arise!

And your avatar is also just beautiful! Good luck with them as well as with the guinea. (Feel free to check out this link https://www.backyardchickens.com/f/45/guinea-fowl)

Thank you all for the nice, warm welcome and compliments. LRH97, the Tolbunt Polish is Tommy's. He gets all the nice birds. ;-) The guinea seems to have adjusted well to being a chicken. He/she hangs out with my other chickens and roosts in the coop with them. It isn't too fond of being cuddled but tolerates us holding him/her to make sure all is well (no boo-boos or bugs). The only thing I notice compared to my friends who have flocks of guineas is that he/she is rather quiet which is OK by me. Drumstick Diva I have heard that some people have kept Freedom Rangers past market time and did get eggs off of them. I am wondering since they are a hydrid if they can be crossed with something to create another meat bird. That way with all the avian flu restrictions we can produce our own meat birds. Thank you Mountain Peeps

the avatar is a picture of our English Lavender Orpington as a chick. She was so fluffy and cute! I will also check out that guinea link.
