I have several breeds coming in next week. I live in Florida and would love to hear from Floridians that have some of these breeds of chickens and how to deal with the heat. Will a reformed shed work, if i put some vents in it? I am getting some dominiques, buff brahmas, barred rocks, black australorps, a golden wyandotte, buff orphington, speckled sussex, salmon faverolles, and sultans. My mom and I are sharing the order, lol.

I know the barred rocks and wyandottes do fine here. Shady area during the day with plenty of water. Even though it is hot the want to be outside. I have a tarp over part of the run so they have shade.

Welcome to BYC!

We have a mixed flock here in FL and know how hot & humid those summers can be! We have Speckled Sussex, Black Australorps and Plymouth Barred Rocks, along with a few other breeds. With lots of water (for drinking, wading and hosing their run), cool treats like watermelon, lots of ventilation and a fan in the coop (not to blow on the birds but to blow warm air out), we did ok last summer. Also, their run is covered and that helps.

Good luck to you and your mom on your birds. And if you would like to connect with other members from FL, you can find them here:

NFLchick has given you some great advice - shade, shade, and more shade, real or manufactured should be a given. Welcome to Backyard chickens.

Welcome!

I'm glad you joined the BYC flock!

You've received some good information so far from NorthFlChick! I haven't had much experience with keeping chickens in really hot, humid weather (at most, it gets up to 100 degrees around here), so can't give much advice of my own.

Good luck with your future chicks!
