This states the city will not take action against those of us with chickens!
"Mr. David Bain asked the Council to consider reviewing the laws regarding keeping chickens within the city limits. After discussion, Council reached a consensus to have no action taken against owners of chickens in Lee’s Summit at this time. The matter will be discussed with the Mayor Pro Tempore to determine Committee assignment for this and reviewing the number of pets allowed within the city limits."
Hi and welcome. I am not under the radar as I am on 20 acres but think 10 acres is a crock! Hopefully your town will come around soon - it is getting more and more popular. I am also in Missouri and our local towns are ok with them.
Anyway, I have some silkies an love them. Enjoy!!
Well I just called the city and the development council is still drafting the proposed ordinance and no idea when it might be ready to go to the City Council. However they've had enough requests that it is being worked on. The lady was very nice and said to check back periodically for updates. If anyone in Lees Summit wants to call the city to encourage them to speed things along it might help. (The squeaky wheel...) the # for the Lees Summit Planning & Development Dept is 816-969-1600.
It does limit the number of chickens to 6 and they must all be hens...no culling allowed. (I can live with that....so can the hens!)
On April 17th the Community and Economic Development Committee met and was to discuss the proposed ordinance, however because of time constraints that did not happen.
So we have to wait until their next meeting before we get closer to this becoming law. (I think the next CEDC meeting is 5/22/12. ) But at least it is drafted!
And that'll be just in time because my broody hen is currently setting on 9 araucana eggs due to hatch around that same week!
