New to BYC - Hello From Lees Summit, MO

Just checking in on this. I live on agricultural land, so I am legal, but I know there has been lots of excitement in Lees Summit about getting chickens. I thought I heard the vote was this week and it looks like it will pass ( although I did see a quote from one of the councilmen that he thought it was a step backwards

I did not realize there were so many people here from Lees Summit! We should start our own thread. Since we have gotten our chickens, we now have another set of neighbors getting them, and the ones beside them are considering it. I was at TSC this weekend and amazed at all the people waiting on the vote and trying to figure out how to house them.
 
Here is another update on the LS chicken ordinance. The CEDC council met last night and while there was support, they are going to revise the proposed ordinance, including details about coop size, construction materials (focused on how to best keep the coop clean), noise levels (currently the proposed ordinance has the coop 40 ft from residences and one councilman wanted that footage increased), and they discussed concerns with slaughtering. (So it will probably be another two months before this goes to the city council.) They mentioned the proposed ordinance restricts owners from culling chickens in view of the public and one councilman asked how that might restrict deer hunters from hanging their deer carcass in trees at home to bleed out and dry out. (Yuck!) Apparently city deer hunters are allowed to do that and they don't want to restrict THAT?!? Don't get me wrong. My hubby deer hunts (we use a slaughter house) and I grew up in the country and watched my dad gut and clean his fair share of deer, but even we did that out of the view of others. Sorry for that rant, but really! Hunters can hang dead deer in their trees but they're concerned with city residents keeping a few clucking hens?! And usually we aren't going to cull the hens since they're for eggs! Sorry ...my rant is over now.

I remember when I was little walking home from elementary school and one of the neighbors having a deer hanging from their tree. This was in the suburbs of Boston. It gave me nightmares for a long time, and I close my eyes as I ran past it.

I just read the ordinance and all the stuff about salmonella. I think it is a bit exagerated. I have read that it is easier to get sick from grocery store eggs and chickens, than those in your backyard.

So this means people have to wait another two months! I would hate them having to regulate what our coops are made of, we made ours from a lot of items from the Restore store and scraps from jobs my husband did. It came out looking like a beautiful dollhouse in the the style of a New England Cape. One very important thing is for it to be predator safe, the coops they sell at the farm stores definitely are not.

My husband is currently helping my neighbors build a coop and pen from their retired wooden swing set.
