Hello,
It is so nice to become a member of BYC. There is so much information and ideas on this page. Thank you for allowing me the opportunity to be a part of it.
I grew up having all kinds of animals and we also had chickens. However, I guess I didn't pay that much attention to them, other than feeding them and throwing out scraps. My husband and I decided that we wanted to get a few chickens to have some fresh eggs. We bought 7 chicks at our local Farm equipment place. Two of them didn't make it. (One already had a hurt leg and somehow the other one got into ants) Anyway, we have 5 beautiful "teenagers". I have been trying to find out what kind they are and with some help we think we have Golden Spangled Hamburgs. We love them. Funny thing is, we have 3 roosters out of the 5. LOL
Now we are trying to find somewhere to get some more ladies. I would like to have the same kind but I don't think it really matters. I just didn't know if they would fight if we brought in different chickens.
We bought a small coop with an attached small yard. I told my husband it was just too little. I got some pallets from a guy I know and built a bigger coop and added a yard. I think it will be good for about 12-14 chickens. Not that we need that many. But I hear that this can be addicting. So, better to be prepared.
I look forward to learning more and enjoying BYC.
Thanks
April

) I had Silver Spangled Hamburgs and they were high strung and flighty, but beautiful and good layers of smaller eggs. I've read that some point in history, Hamburgs earned the nickname, the "Dutch Every Day Layers." Good luck in getting some more hens.
and Welcome To BYC! You might like to check out your state thread if anyone knows where there might be birds available
