Hello,
It is so nice to become a member of BYC. There is so much information and ideas on this page. Thank you for allowing me the opportunity to be a part of it.
I grew up having all kinds of animals and we also had chickens. However, I guess I didn't pay that much attention to them, other than feeding them and throwing out scraps. My husband and I decided that we wanted to get a few chickens to have some fresh eggs. We bought 7 chicks at our local Farm equipment place. Two of them didn't make it. (One already had a hurt leg and somehow the other one got into ants) Anyway, we have 5 beautiful "teenagers". I have been trying to find out what kind they are and with some help we think we have Golden Spangled Hamburgs. We love them. Funny thing is, we have 3 roosters out of the 5. LOL
Now we are trying to find somewhere to get some more ladies. I would like to have the same kind but I don't think it really matters. I just didn't know if they would fight if we brought in different chickens.
We bought a small coop with an attached small yard. I told my husband it was just too little. I got some pallets from a guy I know and built a bigger coop and added a yard. I think it will be good for about 12-14 chickens. Not that we need that many. But I hear that this can be addicting. So, better to be prepared.
I look forward to learning more and enjoying BYC.
Thanks

April

Welcome to BYC! This is the place to be when you have chickens and yes, I think we are all addicted here.) I had Silver Spangled Hamburgs and they were high strung and flighty, but beautiful and good layers of smaller eggs. I've read that some point in history, Hamburgs earned the nickname, the "Dutch Every Day Layers." Good luck in getting some more hens.

Hello there and welcome to BYC!

Oh, chickens are highly addicting! And I am not sure, but I do believe there is no CURE!!!

Hello :frow and Welcome To BYC! You might like to check out your state thread if anyone knows where there might be birds available https://www.backyardchickens.com/t/270925/find-your-states-thread and the BYC BST trade forum, you can place Want ads after you have 20 posts If you have a specific breed in mind, you might want to do a search and find the main threads for that breed and see if you can find a breeder in your area also.
There is a nice article in the Learning Center on adding birds to your flock, (also keep in mind if you need to do a health quarantine depending on where they come from) Generally it is best to let them get used to each other behind wire, ie if you divide the coop or keep the new birds in a cage in the coop etc, and wait until the new birds are the same size as the older ones if you get young birds/chicks, https://www.backyardchickens.com/a/adding-to-your-flock

Thanks
I posted some pics of our babies if anyone can tell me for sure what kind they are. I may not have the right info
