New to BYC & raising chickens

Thank you so much!
Like many other poultry owners, I have had many lessons learned the hard way over the years. Recently something went through the top of a pen gate and pushed the wire in and 10 birds are missing, vanished with no signs, no feathers or any bodies. Now I have welded wire on the gates. I did have some welded wire on the top part of that gate with chicken wire but probably a coyote or fox got in. Now most of my gates have the welded wire and the chicken wire securely fastened. I have a couple of gates left to do. I do have cameras up but it has been quite foggy here at night lately. A camera did go off but because of the fog couldn't see anything. Again, good luck and have fun...

Hi, you can create some shade for your upcoming flock and lots of ventilation for the coop. For the potential predator issue, set up the run with some hot wire (you may also want to consider not free ranging).

Best wishes!
Thank you! That's exactly the direction I'm leaning. We're starting small with 5-6 hens. Looking at coop designs that will allow for decent shade & plenty of ventilation. Definitely can't free range, but possibly a "tractor" run to move them around the yard? Trying to figure out the build plans & logistics for something like that.

This link will take you to an open air coop built by another TX member, you might get some ideas from it: jens-hens-a-southern-texas-coop.75707

And you can chat with other TX members on your state thread (the state threads are linked at the bottom of my post).
