Hi all,
I've been following BYC for about a year now but finally became official!
We recently picked up our first hens ever, after years of reading about everything chicken. I tell ya, being prepared has been a lifesaver but all the reading only gets you so far. I am still figuring out these fluffy feathered creatures.
We have 4 lavender orpington hens and live in a 100yr old home on a half acre in a small town. The other animal residents are a Great Pyrenees, Theodore (Teddy), and two indoor cats, Beauregard and Penelope. Teddy thinks the chickens are his buds. He loves to lay out there and just watch what's going on in chicken world.
The hens aren't allowed to free range within town limits but we were adamant about making sure we were able to rotate to fresh "pasture" each week. We built a long rectangular run down the side of our yard and rotate their coop each week to a new paddock.
Happy to be a part of the BYC community!
