Hello,

I'm new to the site but I have been reading through threads for a while now...I look forward to getting some invaluable advice.

how many chickens do you have?
 
None yet. We get our first chick at the end of May. I am in the midst of building the coop/run? Would you mind giving me some advice on coop design?
 
Your first chick...as in one?

In what part of the world do you live?

Main things need to be are:
Secure...
have plenty of ventilation
secure...
and enough room.



Remember...critters can and will dig into a coop...put a hardwire cloth "skirt" around the bottom.
Chicken wire is worthless...use hardwire cloth.
 
Thank you. Chick was a typo lol. I am in the midst of building a 12 x 8 fully enclosed coop/run. Due to hawks in our backyard, The chickens will not be let out unless I am out there to supervise. I also wrapped the entire coop and run, including underneath, with hardware cloth. Given that it is full secure, do I need a coop door to reduce drafts in the winter? Also, do I need a cool light or a coop heater for the New England winters?thanks for the advice.

Since your in New England I would go to the link https://www.backyardchickens.com/f/26/where-am-i-where-are-you here and find your area and ask them, your questions as they would be able to tell you just how air tight it must be. AS well as if you may need a heat source come winter there in New England. You can meet other members of BYC from your own area there.

Chickens generally can handle cold much better than heat. You might also ask others on the state thread what breeds are hardiest for them.
