New to BYC

Hi all, just introducing myself here! So glad to be part of this community.....I don't have chickens yet as I'm still working on the coop and run. I hope to get two Black Australorpes and two others in the spring. Does anyone know if there are any breeds that DON'T get along? I live in CT, USA, and am looking at laying breeds. Thanks!

Exactly what TwoCrows and MissChick@dee said. I prefer the more docile breeds that are still good layers (but not as good as Leghorns or Sex links) like Wyandotte, Ameraucana, Barred Rock, Buff Orp and Australorp.

You can pretty much get any breeds as chicks close to the same age and they should get along fine as they grow. A pecking order will develop over time and that's perfectly normal. Certain breeds can typically have certain tendencies (like being docile or flighty) but each bird has their own personality so their tendencies can vary somewhat. I think most problems arise when adding more birds to an existing flock. That's a whole different thing.

Good luck with your future flock!!

There’s a link on the page above to the Learning Centre - it’s a great resource. If you have a specific topic in mind, just type it in the search box - there's a wealth of information on past and present threads.

Each week, various topics are discussed, which can also be a great resource - https://www.backyardchickens.com/a/topic-of-the-week-thread-archives

This is a useful link of BYC guides to take a look at announcements-feedback-issues-guides.3 (there's a guide on how to include your location under your avatar - including your location is very helpful).

Welcome to BYC! There is tons of info on this site that is important for new chicken keepers so read up on the articles in the learning center!
I think it depends more on the individual chicken but I at least wouldn't recommend a bunch of similar breeds and one smaller or funky one like a polish or silkie. IME, mixed sizes of birds generally got along fine, but the bantams were always lower in the Pecking Order.
Hope you learn lots, and most importantly, have FUN! :D
