Hey y'all! I've been lurking on the forums and reading articles for weeks and finally joined now that we've gotten our first rounds of chicks! I would google questions and it would inevitably pop up an article from BYC or a forum question from BYC! I feel like this is where all my answers might be! Hah! We bought 6 Australorp chicks almost two weeks ago to start our flock! When our local TSC got in another round of chicks, I couldn't help myself. I went back and grabbed six more chicks; 3 Barred Rocks, 1 Cuckoo Maran and 2 yellow chicks which may actually be Cornish Cross. I wasn't expecting to end up with Cornishes and I had stayed away from the bin with them in it. One super unfortunate side effect of buying chicks at the feed store is that the people you deal with may or may not have any idea what breed they're selling you. So as of now, we have a flock of 12 that may be cut down to 10 much earlier than expected if these two turn out to be Cornish Cross. Honestly, I have loved every second of raising these babies! My husband and I had talked about BYC for years and really started deep research and deciding what we wanted and how we wanted to design a coop and finally took the plunge! I love listening to their little voices get louder and stronger, watching them grow exponentially over the course of a few days, getting in bonding time and watching them huddle up at night and the inevitable night owl jumping into the middle of the pile to stir everyone up. My husband and I are working together on putting the coop together. We're re-purposing our dog kennel into a pretty awesome coop, if I do say so myself. My husband and I have two kids, an almost 8 year old son who is Deaf and autistic and a 1 1/2 year old daughter who is a bundle of energy. I'm a stay-at-home mom and I homeschool our son and will eventually homeschool our daughter as well. My husband is an HVAC contractor. We live in Eastern Arkansas where Summers are long and hot and winters bring ice more than snow. We have two dogs; a GSD/Husky mix rescue who was previously abused and is terrified of everything (including the chicks.. hahah) but loves harder than anyone/any animal I've ever known and a Heinz 58 (mutt mixed with full blooded Jack Russell) who has more ups than anyone in the NBA. We also have two cats who were brought in as mousers but only one of them is any good at it. Misty, our Russian Blue, is the hunter in the family but the chicks were only entertaining for a split second. Tiger, our Maine Coon, is extra curious about the chicks but after being allowed to sniff and check them out, (through the brooder only, of course, no actual direct contact) he pretty well ignores them. I blog when I get a chance, I love to crochet, write and read and the majority of my life revolves around my kids and animals. Glad to be a member after having issues with signing up at first!!
