(1) Are you new to chickens / when did you first get chickens?
I am pretty new to chickens - I got my first two chickens (silkie bantams) from a friend in Feb of this year! I learned the hard way that I had to clip their wings/get a net when they flew over the fence and my dogs got them. :( But, I have since gotten more and I love love love taking care of them!
(2) How many chickens do you have right now?
I have 11 now!
(3) What breeds do you have?
Silkie bantam, Rhode Island Red, Welsummer, 2 Ameraucanas, Black Australorp, Buckeye, 2 Wyandottes, and two unknown breeds (which hopefully I can post here to help me figure out what they are! ).
(4) What are your favorite aspects of raising backyard chickens?
Watching them 'frolick' in the yard (I lovingly call this behavior 'zoomies'), their personalities and habits, and they give me the best excuse to spend some much needed time outdoors!
(5) What are some of your other hobbies?
I like taxidermy and preservation (cleaning skulls and the like), writing novels, growing things, painting/drawing, and it may sounds silly but caring for my animals is definitely a hobby.
(6) Tell us about your family, your other pets, your occupation, or anything else you'd like to share.
I love all living creatures, even the 'unlovable' ones! I would love to be a conservationist someday but right now I rescue and rehab leopard geckos, and have rescued more than my fair share of pet rats. I have many other pets and I love them all!
(7) Bonus: How did you find BYC, how long have you known about BYC, and what made you finally join our awesome community? :D
I am very thorough when it comes to researching the animals I care for and found BYC by accident when I 'Googled' a question I had about my chickens! I have sort of lurked on the forums here and there but finally joined today because I am always asking question :)

@aosborn - Welcome to the flock! :welcome

I am so sorry that your first chickens were lost. But I hope that through BYC and some of the folks here, you may be able to learn about more preventative ways to make sure your new flock stays safe. Welcome to the wonderful world of chicken keeping!

It looks like you already found the forums for identifying your chicken breeds- hopefully you find help there for your unknown birds. Having those sweet chickens is definitely a good excuse to sit outside and watch them, and soak in a beautiful day.

I would love to see some photos of your taxidermy/skull work. I'm curious to know how you go about cleaning skulls- I am able to get a few heads each year but so far I let them sit out naturally for bugs and the like to clean. I have a domestic hog skull I'd love to clean up- it's a monster! (Also, would love to see some of your paintings/drawings!)

You found us in a way so many do- an internet search leads you here to a question someone asked just like yours! Glad you have finally decided to join us. Have a great Thanksgiving!

How very sad. Silkies are easy game, they can jump but, they aren't fliers. Often their crests obscure their vision- another invitation for predators Owners/keepers must keep this in the for front of their minds, when acquiring this breed..
