Hi! I’m Big Mac. (High school moniker to distinguish me from Little Mac.) I’m new to “modern” chicken parenting; I raised layers and broilers many years ago when my mother-in-law ordered them for us from the Sears catalog and they were all white. I guess that dates me, doesn’t it?! My wife and I just bought some land in East Tennessee and are beginning a more serious homestead/self-sufficiency journey. We’ve been doing a lot of it for the past 10 years, but in a city setting. My wife is a reluctant parent right now because when she was young, her grandmother’s chickens would “peck my toes!!” and she didn’t like it then and won’t like it now; but I think if we get the right gentle breeds, she’ll be okay with them. I’m getting ready to begin my coop build and have been searching for plans, and while no available plan meets my “wants”, I have been able to cobble together a layout from great coops here at BYC and other places. I should be starting the project in the next couple weeks and hope it doesn’t take more than a few weeks. This will be my “starter home” for the birds, learning and perfecting along the way so I can build them their dream home soon. I will always be open and appreciative of tips, comments, and advice from all of you experienced parents. And thanks in advance for all of it.
