Hi everyone my name is Ashley and I’m a mom of 3 wonderful children and 20 awesome chickens & chicks, 2 dogs, 2 cats & a love bird. And We are from Maryland. I am shy and usually scared to ask for advice or help even when I need it most. But I know I need to overcome this and since I don’t know what to do with a few things I’ve decided to put my fear aside and join BYC. I figure the worst that can happen is nobody answers and the best could be I am accepted into an amazing community and make some friends along the way!
(1) Are you new to chickens / when did you first get chickens? I’m not entirely new to chickens but I am still on the greener side. We’ve had them for about 10 years but this is my first time owning my own. My girls are fairly young 10 are 2 years old and I also have 10 chicks I hatched in August.
(2) How many chickens do you have right now? 20 total. 9 laying hens & 1 Roo & 10 - 10week old chicks. I think we have 4 roo’s and 6 hens in just not completely sure
(3) What breeds do you have? I have 2 red sexlinks, 1 black sexlink, 6 Rhode Island Reds. My roo is a Light Buff brahma. My chicks are are cross of Buff Brahma, rir & sex link. But so far they all are favoring the color of my roo all white with a little black.
(4) What are your favorite aspects of raising backyard chickens? I don’t think I have just 1 favorite. I love getting the eggs of course but watching each one’s individual personalities is fascinating as well.
(5) What are some of your other hobbies? I enjoy spending most my time hanging out with my kids and doing whatever they want to do. We go on walks through the woods, fishing, hunting, atv & dirt bike riding, horse back riding and so much more.
(6) Tell us about your family, your other pets, your occupation, or anything else you'd like to share. I have a pocket pitbull named Bella who is 14 that we got from an abusive owner who beat and shot her with bb’s, a Chiweenie named Squirt who is 12 and going blind he’s my old man but doesn’t let his age slow him down, 1 cat named Ming-Ming who’s 13, a cat named Precious who’s 8, and Layla our love bird I got from a friend just not sure how old she is. We are looking to get some of our own horses, beef cows, feeder pigs and pet goats in the next year or 2.
(7) Bonus: How did you find BYC, how long have you known about BYC, and what made you finally join our awesome community?
I found BYC during a web search when my black sex link was sick and I’m very shy and I guess you could say anti-social so I didn’t join. I kind of just crept on the page and looked around. I finally decided I had to stop being so scared or shy to talk to people or ask for help. That’s my downfall is I’m so shy about talking to people or asking for help that it hurts me sometimes when I shouldn’t be scared.
