New to BYC

Welcome from So. Calif.....

And, may I suggest, if you haven't yet, to buy a copy of "Raising Chickens for Dummies". Great for quick, easy look up... and a quick, easy read for basic information on chickens and raising chickens.

If anything unusual happens to your chickens, or if you have a question about something regarding one, it is good to take a digital photo and upload it to the site, so you can post it in your post if need be... if you have a "what's this" question, it's helpful.

It is best to separate, isolate, quarantine new birds from the established flock to be sure there is no disease in the new birds that can be spread to your established flock. Be careful where you buy or get birds. Disease is always a risk.

And, use the SEARCH here on BYC... you can search any key word, subject, disease, worming, breed, etc... and find much information.

Build your coop predator proof, including a roof... a sand floor is good. Make sure you can keep the chickens cool in the summer and warm in the winter also. Make your coop easy clean -- Laying pellets are less messy, have less waste than laying mash. Also, have a separate place, a cage in the garage, porch, house, etc, for isolating and treating a sick bird.

I don't have it, but there is a link or a site of all the "normal" poop for chickens.. and there are a lot that are normal... but, you need to know what is and isn't normal. Become a poop watcher!
You can count on info from dawg53.... a good reliable, experienced helpful source of accurate information.

Welcome and good luck.

Welcome! I recently joined as well, and I have just begun building a small coop for the 4 chicks I ordered. They'll be here on October 11. I have three children as well and they are very excited! Good luck!
