I got my first ones about a year ago... Mine didn't want to lay in a nest either, but we kept sitting the hens in them and after about 4 days they started laying in the nest. When we added the new ones they watched my original girls and soon started laying in the nests too.

I have a few questions....Ive posted on other threads but no one replies :/ I buy my chickens from a stock market about 30 minutes away and the guy i buy my silkies from sales them in pairs (a hen and rooster). I already bought a set of white and buff silkies, but i'm curious... could i ever have to many roosters? I plan on going back next Saturday and getting two more sets (black and blue). I really hate to kill the roosters or even give them away... The new coop we are making is gonna be 15ftx10ft...with a 50ftx50ft run...will that be big enough for 6 roosters and 12+ hens?

Hows it going! I just joined BYC. Greetings from Nor Cal. Im in Richmond CA (bordering El Sobrante) and i am excited to be starting my own backyard chicken adventure. I just finished my hoop house/greenhouse and am now onto my next project: chickens and fresh eggs.

I will be converting a 6ft x 6ft x 4f high chainlink dog kennel into a DIY chicken coop. Has anyone else done this before? I have numerous idea in my head for designs and will be building this week, with hopes of having my flock by the end of the week, assuming i can get some chickens. What are thoughts on getting chickens from Craigslist? Anyone have good/bad experiences?

I am new to chickens so if anyone is in my area and has any advice for me or maybe some young egg-laying chickens for sale please message me. I do not want chicks to start with. Just poulets.

I would like to have 6-7 chickens (females only). Rhode island reds have been suggested to me...anyone have any input on this? i Know there are numerous other breeds. Im looking for a fairly large breed chicken with good egg production...I want large eggs :)

Cheers!
Hi, My first chicken coop was made from a dog run. It was whatI had and it worked well. I have bought chickens from craigs list. Just brought home 5 of them. Be careful if they are young that you dont get loaded up with cockerels though lol! That happened to my mom once ! No advice on breeds. i have only silkies and in the past Salmon Faverolles and Cochins. They were both nice friendly chickens ;)

That sounds like a nice space for them. I have too many roosters(4) :) and only one pullet and some babies right now thank goodness Silkie Roosters are not as aggressive with each other for the most part as some other breeds. It depends on what you plans are and you might want to house them in pairs if you are going to breed for color. Why dont you see if he will sell you a trio.. black, blue and splash... 1 rooster and 2 hens. Those colors bred together will give you :

Blue Poultry Genetics:

Blue X Blue = 50% Blue, 25% Black, 25% Splash
Blue X Black = 50% Blue, 50% Black
Blue X Splash = 50% Blue, 50% Splash
Black X Black = 100% Black
Splash X Splash = 100% Splash
Splash X Black = 100% Blue

The guy i buy them from only has 4 colors :/ (white, black, blue, and buff). I've been trying to find a nice splash hen for sale around here and so far i haven't found any..
