Hi there, I was hoping someone could help me with this. I have 2 Isa Browns & 1 Welsummer
I bought them on April 30th and they said they were 1-2 weeks old at that time. My calculations takes the to 13 weeks now. Yesterday we found an perfect beautiful light brown good sized egg in their nesting box! These are my first chickens ever and I don't know a lot yet. But I thought someone was playing a joke on us and planted it there cuz they are too young!?? But no one has owned up to it. Is this possible that one layed so early?

Welcome to BYC!! Please make yourself at home and we are here to help.

Yes, 13 weeks if very young for pullets to start. However, it is possible. But you could always have had a trick played on you!!

LOL Wait and see if there is another laid.

Please feel free to ask any other questions and be sure to check out our learning center.

Welcome to BYC! Your Isa Browns are Red Sex Link chickens which are egg laying machines and can begin laying as early as 17 weeks (the Welsummers are a little later laying). I have heard of one Red Sex Link hen which laid an egg at 15 weeks, but 13 weeks is stretching the bounds of credibility. I think either your birds were a little older than you were told when you got them (very likely), or else someone is playing a joke on you. Anyway, good luck with your flock and I hope you get lots more eggs.

P.S. I forgot to mention, that the Welsummer will lay much darker brown eggs than the Isa Browns. Their eggs are frequently referred to as "chocolate eggs."

I don't think much of people who "plant" an egg as a joke - even though I usually have a good sense of humor. So I truly hope your pullet did lay the egg - she would be a chick prodigy I imagine.

Anytime they do start laying, I'm sure you will be thrilled with the eggs. Welcome to BYC.

Thanks for the links!
I agree, not a funny joke....my hubby and I were so excited when we unexpected found it! I can't wait to check again today, nothing yesterday :(
I also was thinking they could of been a little older than they said when we got them but being new to chickens I wasn't sure, even though the pics I googled pretty much lined up with what they looked like at the age I thought they were? Well......stay tuned! Lol
Maybe we have some special chicken or something?!? Lol
Thanks all! :D

Hello there and welcome to BYC!

Cute birds! Yes, I wouldn't enjoy this joke either!! Although I am sure I would be laughing about it later on down the road. LOL

Your birds are a bit young. Combs, faces and wattles need to be much redder. When they start to squat for you, the eggs should be coming down the pipe soon!!

Enjoy your poultry adventures!

Well the mystery is over....the guy that was checking on our girls while we were on vacation admitted he did it as a harmless funny joke :/ .....which it was but CLEARLY. He's not a first time chicken owner!
So I guess we have to wait......

Hello :frow and Welcome To BYC! Hope your hens actually do start laying soon! And tell your friend he should be bringing you a couple of dozen eggs if he is going to do that, not one at a time!

This little lady went broody at 20 weeks and at 23 weeks hatched out her first chicks ...

When she was 13 weeks I would find soft egg's well there were 10 pullets at the time and I started putting them in cages with three at a time and would start separating them as we got egg's and that took a day so I have this pullet recorded as producing egg's in a cage at 13 weeks and then up till now so to answer your question yes it is possible and you must have missed the first soft egg or just gotten lucky but keep an eye on her as she will do good for you ....

Enjoy all your poultry ventures .....
