New to BYC

Thanks so much!
In the land of ducks, we raise Pekins, Muscovies, Saxonies, and are planning a batch of Moulards for the spring. All our meat birds are raised free range and organic. For geese, we have Toulouse and Embden X Chinese. I also raise ring-necked pheasants and Coturnix quail under a NYS DEC game bird breeding license.
One of my friends is trying to talk me into guinea fowl...

Michael: My daughter is a bit older at 23, but has worked on an free range, organic egg farm since she was 16. I started with just the quail and pheasants, and she decided to get some ducks. She started with an incubator full of Pekin eggs, and I got her a batch of day old ducklings, as she had most of the birds in the incubator sold before they even hatched. After that, I started bringing home breeding pairs of ducks and geese, and eventually, as the crazy bird lady of the area, ended up getting cold called to see if I would take in more. My daughter and I split up the business based on our strengths - for me, it's husbandry, breeding, incubation, and genetics, for her, it's marketing, sales, and maintaining organic status. It's been a great mother/daughter experience for us, and I honestly did not expect my little hobby business to take off as fast as it did. Once again, she's got birds sold, this time before the spring eggs have been laid..
