Saddles or aprons do help protect a hen's back and also speed healing. How many roosters and hens do your have? Generally a rooster can handle 10 hens, less hens than that and they can be overbred and damaged. Sometimes even with a large number of hens the damage still occurs because roosters have their favorites, generally ones who are too placcid or slow to run away or hide from them. Those will have the worst signs of over use.
