So about a week ago I walked into my coop and behold there's a baby chick. I was aware a baby was growing under my broody old English but I guess I assumed she wouldn't make it hatch. So the new chick is fine but now I have 3 of its siblings still in the egg that I have been watching but momma hasn't been the best about sitting on them. How do I know if the chick has died? From kindling just a moment ago two are moving around a lot and the egg is completely black how long do you think until hatching? The third is completely black but not moving much. At what stage do they really start moving and must they be moving to be sure their alive? Also I do not have access to an incubator. Is it possible to hand turn eggs under a heat lamp?

If the hen isn't still sitting on the eggs, the embryos will soon die.
When chicks hatch and the hatch is too prolonged, she'll come off the nest to care for the known live chick.

If you makeshift an incubator, don't use a heat lamp. It will likely be too hot and project too much heat into the egg.
You can use a regular light bulb. Depending on the space, even a 40, 60 or 75 watt will work.
Keep the eggs away from the heat source. You want the area around the eggs to be between 95 and 103 F.
Normally it is 99.5 but close to hatch, embryos can handle a wider temperature range.
