new to chicken raising lost house last august lost everything and then this bloody freeking virus started

Hello and welcome to BYC! :frow Glad you joined.
So sorry to read about your home and your dogs. :hugs

I think you are confusing White Leghorns with Cornish crosses. Leghorns are a petite Mediterranean breed that lay large white eggs.
Barred rocks are a nice dual purpose breed that lay brown eggs as well as Black Australorps.
Good luck with restarting everything.
i am fairly sure they were white legerns not leghorns sorry i realized that after i looked in my grand ,mas book i think her spelling was off

Welcome to BYC - Cornish cross are the birds that you want to stay away from. You are best feeding a particular diet for each life cycle of the birds.
i can not feed the store baught brand as there is not many good suppliers in my area that another reason i want to feed nature can anyone tell me the ingredients in comersal food

Welcome to BYC! Agree that the Leghorns would be hard to plump like you are describing, they are a very petite, egg laying breed! And the best in the business!
Cornish "broilers" are probably what you want for a meat bird. A lot of them are ready to process at around 8-10 weeks I think.
Best of luck!!
