New to chicken raising

We bought a house that came with 6 chickens. My husband has raised chickens in the past and thinks I am making too much of a big deal about everything. We have a tiny coop with two nesting boxes. They chickens have a roost in the outside covered run space where they sleep at night. I live I. South Texas and it is very hot and humid here. The run is broken down and we are planning to replace it with a Wichita coop (or something very similar). My chickens free range when I am around but when I am at work they are in the pen. In June they were lying 4-5 eggs a day and now I am lucky if I get two from the same two chickens. I am thinking it could be the heat here. They are less than a year old. Any ideas?
Secondly, I'd like to add some new chicks. If I buy them from the feed store how should I integrate them to group?

As you can see, there's more than one way to approach integration. I'd suggest reading through and then taking ideas from one or all of the links and devising a strategy that works for you.

Its just my opinion, but you may wish to get your new coop and run sorted out before getting additional chicks.

You got given some great links to check re integration! As for the egg laying, the heat can be a factor. I think like us humans, chickens don't feel productive when they are uncomfortably hot or cold. Hopefully production will pick up again when the cooler months arrive.
 
Thank you all for the info and support. I have read many of the references about integrating chickens. This site is a wealth of information.
