My name is Teresa & my husband has just agreed (about 7 weeks ago) to entertain my fascination with chickens.
He said to start with 3...so I bought 10!
I have no idea what breeds, but by comparing my beauties with pics I've come across I think I have a buff bantam, 2 barred plymouths, 3 red pullets, 3 leghorns & an unidentified black one (my favorite!) with golden feathers on her breast/neck whom my son has named "Wei".
My children & I are having an absolute blast!!!
I've decided to do a vegetable garden as well as an herb garden bcz I've read that with the right herbs, they don't have to be on medicated food & they love to peck around in the vegetables!
I've not yet completed my permanent coop.
It's proven to be a lot more complicated than I'd ever dreamed!!!
Any tips on "don't forget to..." Regarding the coop are definitely welcomed!
I am thrilled to find this app so that I have a "go-to" for additional reading & support.

Hello :frow and Welcome To BYC! Sounds like a nice case of Chicken Math! The #1 coop tip seems to be Build Bigger, you will want more chickens! A great place to start is the BYC Learning Center, lots of nice articles on all aspects of poultry keeping and be sure to check out the Housing and Coops section for tips https://www.backyardchickens.com/a/housing-and-feeding-your-chickens and check out your state thread for chicken keeping neighbors and any recommendations they may have so far as coops etc https://www.backyardchickens.com/t/44/texas and if you do a search there are some threads on keeping coops cooler etc https://www.backyardchickens.com/t/5944/10-tips-for-a-cooler-coop
and threads like What I Wish I Had Known are helpful https://www.backyardchickens.com/t/...sh-you-had-known-before-you-got-your-chickens
If you want to try and figure out what your mystery bird Wei is, you could post pictures of her on the What Breed Or Gender Is This forum https://www.backyardchickens.com/f/15/what-breed-or-gender-is-this
