I'm new to this backyard chicken thing. I have wanted to have chickens for fresh eggs and have pets for awhile. As a vet tech I love anything with fur and feathers. I also have 2 parrots. Leo the African grey and Cloud the umbrella cockatoo. Any advice is welcome. It appears I have 2 pullets I thought were Buffs but are actually red sex links. I want to keep them healthy so what is best food to feed?

Welcome to BYC!

You might want to start with some reading in our learning center. Lots of good articles on all the aspects of keeping poultry...

As for feeding them, if they are of laying age, you will want to feed them a good layer feed which will have calcium. Offer oyster shell on the side in case they need more in their diet. If they are not yet laying, you will want to keep them on starter or grower feed until they are of laying age.

Love your parrots names! I used to keep a lot of Cockatiels and Lovebirds, but am down to one old cranky male Cockatiel named Peep. LOL Crazy boy, but he is loved. :-)

Welcome to our flock!

It depends on the ages of your pullets. Up to 8 weeks feed them starter feed, at 8-18 weeks switch to grower feed, & after 18 weeks switch them to layer feed and provide them with crushed oyster shells as well to make certain they are getting enough calcium in their diet.
