Hi everyone I'm Terri. I'm 28 years old and was diagnosed with a serious disease when I was a teenager. My doctor suggested I find a hobby, something to put my energy and mind into, to help with my depression, and I chose...chickens! Right now I have a (very) mixed flock. I have Miss Sadie a SLW, Miss Anna an EE, Jean a Brown Leghorn, Henrietta a New Hampshire Red, Prissy a Plymouth Rock, Louise a Black Australorp, and my favorite of all my girls is Maggie my Barred Rock. I plan on expanding next summer and adding to my flock. I've caught the fever, and as my title says, my husband is thrilled lol! My girls are well spoiled, and I love them (and the eggs lol). I'm still very new and I learn something new every day. I've posted a pic of my Maggie. Any time I'm in the yard she has to be in my arms, and if I ignore her, omgoodness she lets me know about it. I never knew one chicken could make so much noise. I think she's a little spoiled. She's queen of the flock, and I wouldn't have it any other way. I plan on adding more Barred Rocks to my flock, and my hope is that I will actually get a roo this go round since my roo turned out to be a hen lol. I'm excited to learn more about chickens, and the crazy chicken people like me who keep them! Thanks everyone! From me and Maggie! <3

Sounds like you have a nice flock! Maggie must be quite the character!

I'm with you that Barred Rocks are AWESOME. We've got 3 of them, and all have turned out to be some of the friendliest, most personable chickens we own. The most hilarious thing is that if they think you aren't paying enough attention to them, ours bite really hard as if to say, "Hey, I'm here, you know!" Enjoy the exciting world of chickens with us.

Thanks y'all! Maggie is a character! She's my baby. The rest of my girls only want to have something to do with me when it's food time. The rest of the time they want to patrol the yard. Maggie actually comes to the sound of my voice! I really look forward to more Barred Rocks. If they're all like Maggie, I'm going to be very happy!

He is a very good sport lol. He deals with the chickens for the eggs and the meat (in the future we plan on hatching some for meat). For now he tells me "Go deal with your 'Feathered Queens of the Yard.'" That's actually what he calls them lol! He calls Maggie the 'HBIC' when he sees her, that's short for 'Head B**** In Charge' lol. She runs up to him and bites him and runs away. They have this hilarious love/hate relationship. He goes outside and I hear "****** Maggie!" and I look outside and she's chasing him across the yard! She LIVES to harass him. He pretends not to love it. I catch him chasing her down to catch her and pick her up to love on her. He *thinks* I don't see him. Maggie's arch nemesis Prissy the Plymouth Rock is his favorite. He says Prissy is his chicken. She's mean to me! I NEVER thought chickens had personality, but they do!

That was a great intro and I loved your Maggie stories.

We have a mixed flock of 14 and while I'm the primary chicken wrangler, our partially lame RIR girl has adopted DH as her person. She tolerates me because I do most of her care but when she hears DH's voice, she hobbles as fast as she can to him for cuddling and a special treat. I love seeing their interactions.

Chickens are great to have around, it's fun learning their personal quirks and personalities.

Make yourself at home here and if you have any questions, feel free to ask. It's nice to have you join us!
