New to Chickens and forum. Have 15 coming.

I’m new to chickens. I have 15 chicks coming from Murray McMurray in two weeks. 4 Black stars. 4 Red stars. 4 White Leghorns (wife wanted some white ones) and 2 Rhode Island Red Hens. 1 Rhode Island Red Rooster. (I love to hear a rooster. Wife doesn’t know roosters coming.) I am borrowing a homemade brooder box I plan to disinfect before chicks arrive. I have a 10X15 outbuilding I will be converting to a coop and building an attached run. I am probably gonna cut the building down to a 10X10 because of rot on the front and to recycle some of the good material and to cut on cost of the new metal roof planned. I plan to leave eaves open on Metal to allow ventilation along with ridge vent. I’m gonna put in roosting area and nest boxes etc. I’m in East Tennessee by the way. Mild winter extremely humid summers. Any tips or criticism would be appreciated. Has anyone used Murray. I had two Co workers recommend them.

No. Meyers. But I recently visited a free farm tour here and the farmer used Murray McMurray. Seems reputable. Welcome! :):frow:welcome

Hello and:welcome! It's great to have you! I've never used Murray, but I've checked into them before and they seem pretty legit. The only advise that I can think of off the top of my head is to try to keep them cool in the summers! Also, just letting you know, leghorns can, but not always, be more aggressive. I am super partial to Rhode Island Reds. They are hybrids, so they are super great layers. I can hope that your wife likes the sound of roosters too.:) It sound like you will be treating your chickens very nicely. Any questions or concerns about your new chicks(and when to get older) can pretty much be answered on this forum. Everybody here is super helpful! I hope that you like it here! Have a great day!:D

Thank you. I hope the wife learns to love the rooster. Haha. Thanks for the leghorn tip. They weren’t something I was interested in really but she wanted some white ones sooo. I just hope they all show up alive and healthy. The run and coop are planned to have some sunshine but a little more shade than sun because of these miserable summers here.

You are very welcome! Have a great day!:D:frow That's good that you are making sure they have some shade! Chickens take dirt baths in the summer to keep them cool since the ground is, so your chickens might dig up a bunch a dirt come summer. That would be a good thing if your wife did end up liking the rooster since they tend to be a little loud...:)
