New to chickens? how many are you starting with?

We took it slow at first, but now someone seems to have cut our brakes!!! We started in March 2008 with 4 "straight run heavies" (I had no idea what that was), then gave away the 2 super mean Red roosters, added 2 more mutt chicks from my egg lady 3 months later, then bought my Beautiful blue Cochin rooster from another lady a month after that....2009 we bought 2 EE's. This year, it's been insane....We aren't even going there.....

I came here thinking I would get two. Then I read a lot, and realized if one didn't make it, the situation would not be a happy one. So I decided with three. THEN (lol!) I thought, well.. what if TWO don't make it? Or one or two are roosters? So I ended up getting four.

We plan on getting meaties too.

I should have been a little clearer...6 feet of that 20 foot building will be a supply area. So, really the coop area will be 8x14...supply area 8x6.

I'm anxiously waiting on 9 - (3 light Brahmas, 3 Black Sex link, and 3 Golden Comets)! They're arriving May 17th. These are my first

We have 6 chicks... 3 RIR and 3 black sex links and they will be 2 weeks old this weekend. I absolutely adore them and I wouldn't doubt there being more in the future...
