New to chickens in AZ

Thank you all for the kind words. We are excited to restart a new flock and chicks were ordered today. We do not think it was raccoons that took our girls from us. We live in the Arizona desert and there are NO trees and VERY few hiding spots for them. there are a few cactus, some small bushes, and grasses, and a WHOLE LOT of sand! I have NEVER seen, or talked to anyone that has seen, a racoon in our area.

I retract my last statement, though I have not seen any, apparently there are raccoons in the desert around our home. We did not think they were in the area and always saw them as "woodland" critters, but "Professor Google" and Arizona fish and game say otherwise.

Is Professor Google related to Dr. Google? Must be, lol. Well, knowledge is power, no matter where it comes from!

It has been a while since I posted. About 8 months ago we had disaster strike the flock. EVERY bird in the flock was murdered in one night. We do not know what killed them all, but some were carried into the neighbors yards, the rest were ripped apart in the run. We suspect that it was a bobcat because we cannot believe that a coyote could get over the 7ft brick wall and I don't think an owl would have killed EVERY bird. Due to the heat of the AZ summers we decided to wait to start over.

That time has finally come. We are placing an order for more chicks to be delivered in the next couple of months. While we wait, we will be doing some renovations and improvements on the chicken run to try and avoid another massacre.

More to come as things move along.

Oh my gosh. I am so sorry. That is a nightmare.

This summer has been awful, you are smart for waiting.
