So I'm not completely brand-spankin' new, I've had my chickens since early January (of 2014) and have been perusing this site for how-to's and to answer my endless supply of questions! I was very fortunate to find this site when I was just googling around for answers.
I started out with four chicks in January, 3 Barred Rocks and 1 Easter Egger. By March I began to hear crowing, thus discovering I had a rooster. I initially planned on getting rid of him (my husband and I weren't planning on raising chicks and our chickens aren't free-ranged) so I bought a Red Production from the local co-op. She was a sweet, smart bird that followed me around constantly and came when I called her, but with a mishap with a family dog she was no more
. We then proceeded to get another chick, this time it was a Rhode Island Red and has been great and acts like a dog sometimes! Haha. So just in the past week, my husband and I have discovered that ALL of our Barred Rocks are roos! We didn't need one rooster, so definitely not 3! So we're having to sell/give away those and get a couple replacements. Once the roosters are gone, we'll be back to our small flock of 1 EE, 1 RIR, and 2 Red production. Whew! We hope to get one more addition but haven't decided exactly what yet.
I have just graduated from college and so my next step is to go to graduate school for a Doctorate in Physical Therapy. I love playing soccer and have discovered a love of playing with my chickens! No other pets at the moment, hopefully there will be in the future. The townhouse we live in doesn't allow pets (except for the usual fish), but we took the chance and asked our landlord about chickens, and thankfully he said yes!
Thank you to all of y'all that post to this site to help me out with my questions, I can't wait to see what else I will learn from all y'all!
