New to chickens in North Texas

Welcome to BYC! I like to freeze some canned corn and give to them! They really go for it! Frozen cantaloupe or watermelon works well too. I also like to change their water several times a day. A small fan in the run during the day really helps as well. Good luck with them! Oh, we have a couple young laying Blue Jersey Giants too, beautiful birds! 🙂

So how do you handle the heat? I have a little “pool” (a pot saucer with water) for them but they keep pooping in it and drinking the water instead of their waterer with electrolytes… any suggestions or ideas?
Mud. I just run the hose and make mud. They scratch in it, dig in and wallow like little piglets. I do give them electrolytes about 3x a week. Also I have cat litter boxes of cool water. They stand in them, poop in them, and of course they drink the nasty water. Apparently poop tea is a treat.

Greetings & Salutations. Welcome Rox.

If you can provide a shaded area. We were going to remove a couple of large unsightly bushes from the front...but it's their fav place for shade. Also a small bottle w/frozen water in a large water bowl, will keep it cooler.

As another wrote, cold treats such as watermelon, fruits and we put our cucs that got away (too large) in the fridge to chill and give them some. Just make sure to control the amounts of treats. Ours will devour wet food/pellets.

This is a wonderful site on which to Learn and enjoy. We are pleased to have you in the community.
