The link to the treats is a good one thanks for letting me know. I am still trying to find my way through the forums.

I talked with the lady today and she is going to let me sit in the pen with them. Those that I am ok with she will temp. band them so she knows which ones are ok. Out of a flock of 36 surely I can find 6 that won't beat me up too bad lol!!! Almost done with the coop. They will be 10 weeks this week.

think sitting with chickens will be fine for you. Wear a hat as poo protection. Chickens tend to poo on anything and anyone it really isn't personal. You might want to sit and read a magazine to calm you down. The more you ignore them, the more they will probably explore you. You don't have to rush trying to lure them into your lap - if that is too stressful for you at first.

If they give you a slight peck it's because chickens don't have hands, they explore things by pecking - even little chicks, trying to figure out what is food and what isn't. You'll really be fine and you will become a chicken addict just like the rest of the BYCERS.

I'm glad to see I'm not the only one that was a bit afraid of chickens. I used to go to my great-grandmothers at about age 4 and would head straight to her coop to get eggs. I'd run my hand under those chickens and, of course, get pecked. Ever since then I loved chickens but was afraid of them. My fear didn't end at chickens, I was afraid of parrots and other pet birds, too.

Yet I desperately wanted chickens. Decided about 1 1/2 years ago to forge ahead and initially got pullets as I wasn't sure I could handle chicks. That went okay and then got baby chicks last spring.

I really enjoy my girls and have gotten over the most of my fear. I handled the chicks a lot when they were little and that helped. However, I do know who is inclined to peck and I keep my hands clear of her beak!

You'll get over the fear as you deal with your chickens on a daily basis. I wish you the best as I truly understand where you're coming from!

Hi Casey5! Your story made me laugh, you remind me so much of my husband. Seagulls especially hate him & he really does not like the beach because he knows he will get pooped on! I'm new to the site, too, and learning a lot. I have 9 chicks I incubated in my classroom, that are 6 days old now. And you talk about POOP! My gosh, I'm glad I'm out of school for the summer so I can change their paper towels every two hours!
