Hello all, I'm new to raising chickens, but not new to animals or the outdoors. I was a house framer for 20 years so I'm building a small house for my flock. Not quite done but getting there. Still have to design the inside so I'll definitely be looking for pointers. Currently 12 chicks with room for growth. Coop is 8'x12' with 2 windows facing south, one window facing west and one door facing west. I'm planning on insulating since I'm in the mountains.
Thanks for the input.

Some process shots of mine, just for fun. My coop is against our house, up on stilts because it's built on a slope. I included an interior wall covered in hardware cloth, with a recycled screen door. This reduces the birds' space to 8x8, but gives me some storage space the right size for haybales and feed bins. It's really nice to have these things inside the coop, but somewhere the girls can't perch and shit on them. Also, notice the tiny shelf next to the door. This is an important feature. It's for setting your coffee down when you go out with a basket to collect eggs.
